Bromley 'A' 2 -1 Hollands & Blair - Under 18 KitToFit Challenge Cup Final (2017-04-23) (2017-04-30)
By Luke Bissett
Bromley come from behind to cause cup final heartbreak for Hollands & Blair with 88th minute winner.
Hollands & Blair, who currently sit at the top of the Under 18 South table, started the Under 18 KitToFit Challenge Cup final the more livelier side of the two with a quick succession of free kicks in the opening 10 minutes testing the Bromley goalkeeper, Morgan Wilkins-Oliver.
And the early pressure soon payed off. As in the 16th minute, a long ball sent up from defence was knocked on by Reece Jenkins, to the feet of Ross Borg on the edge of the area. The number 9 with an outside of the boot finish, sent the ball past Wilkins-Oliver, with it clipping off the post on its way in. It was advantage Hollands & Blair, with Bromley needing to step their game up a gear to compete with well-drilled opponents.
The Hollands & Blair attacks continued, with a physical Bromley side struggling to contain the opposing forward players. The 26th minute saw Bromley defender Edward Jones mistime a tackle on striker Ross Borg, resulting in a Hollands & Blair free kick just outside the box. The free kick, taken by captain Jack A'Court, was bent over the wall and looked to be making its way into the roof of the net. However, the ball didn't come down soon enough, with it striking against the bar.
Minutes later, Bromley displayed the attacking threat they pose with a fast flowing counter-attack. Captain Luai Suliman looked to be through on goal with a ball being played over the top, until a last ditch tackle halted his progress.
Hollands & Blair continued to control the remainder of the half with numerous enticing crosses being delivered into the box, just lacking a final touch to send it past Wilkins-Oliver. And things seemed to get worse for Bromley, as in the dying seconds of the half, Hollands & Blair striker Ross Borg caught Wilkins-Oliver as he attempted to take the ball round him. The Bromley goalkeeper was down for a considerable amount of time during the interval, and had to be stretchered off the field.
The start of the second half saw the introduction of Bromley striker, Andy Somo, who came on for the injured Wilkins-Oliver. Somo's introduction made an almost immediate impact on the game with his fresh legs causing a nightmare for the Hollands & Blair defenders to mark.
The balance of the game had shifted in Bromley's favour, with Hollands & Blair struggling to pick up from where they left off in the first half. And Bromley went extremely close to balancing the score line in the 65th minute, as Jordan Gadd beat a defender out wide and looked to send the ball into the box. His attempted cross however, looked more likely to be going in, with Hollands & Blair goalkeeper Alex Deney just getting fingertips on the ball to tip it over the bar.
But in the 69th minute, the Bromley attacks became all too much for Hollands & Blair. A shot from outside of the box was parried by Deney straight into the path of an unmarked Jordan Gadd, who calmly dispatched the ball into the roof of the net to make it 1-1. The game was all to play for in the remaining 20 minutes.
Tensions began to mount as both sides looked to snatch a winning goal in the dying embers of the match. And as the game looked to be heading towards extra time, two Bromley substitutes, Martin Inanov and Andy Somo, combined to give their side the lead. It was in the 88th minute as Inanov's cross from the left fell to Somo, whom whilst holding off two Hollands & Blair defenders, sent the ball flying into the top corner with a left foot finish. It was 2-1 to Bromley, with minutes left to be played.
Hollands & Blair attempted to get back into the game, but Bromley hung on to see the game out as 2-1 winners. A game of two halves, that resulted with the side that controlled the latter crowned champions of the Under 18 KitToFit Challenge Cup.
